Chronology
After 20 years, Odysseus finally returns to Ithaca. There he finds his wife imprisoned, with suitors vying for the kingship, and his son facing death at her hands. To win back his family and everything he has lost, Odysseus must rediscover his strength. Ralph Fiennes and Juliette Binoche appear together in a film for the third time. It tells the story of Odysseus’ attempt to return home to Ithaca after the Trojan War
One of the greatest works of Western literature, Homer’s ODYSSEY has been adapted into a film many times and in many different ways. From the very beginning, he is beset by obstacles in the form of monsters, a sorceress, sirens, lotus eaters, cannibals, etc. Earlier versions of this story focused on the spectacular and sensational elements, particularly 1954’s ULYSSES, starring Kirk Douglas. (For this film, Odysseus was renamed Ulysses for unknown reasons.) This version differs by focusing on the human elements of the story, when Odysseus finally returns to Ithaca after 10 hard-fought years to find his kingdom in decline and his wife at the mercy of gangsters who want to marry her to get their money and the kingdom, because everyone thinks Odysseus is dead. They threaten to take her and Ithaca by force unless she chooses one of them as her husband.
But a large portion of the film has no dialogue at all
After 10 years, Odysseus is unrecognizable and must assess the situation before planning his strategy to get rid of these vile men exploiting his land and take his rightful place as king. He disguises himself as a tramp until he can reveal himself and act. This is not a film full of CGI special effects and aimed at teenagers; it is aimed at intelligent adults with adult feelings and reason. The literate screenplay by the late Edward Bond, John Collee and Uberto Pasolini is a joy to listen to, especially when spoken by top-notch actors. The actors work a lot with “subtext”, especially the brilliant Juliette Binoche as Penelope.
She delivers a great, complex performance
Ralph Fiennes delivers the best performance I have seen from him so far. Mr. Pasolini is also the director of the film and he does a great job of keeping it focused and exciting. The cinematography was done by Marius Panduru, who is wonderfully supported by the beautiful locations on the island of Corfu. The effective and unobtrusive score is by Oscar winner Rachel Portman.

If such things bother you, I would like to warn you that the film contains a lot of blood and violence and some nudity (including a long Monty scene from Mr. I am so grateful to the producers for having the courage to make a film aimed at intelligent adults. I hope it finds enough support among audiences to encourage others to do the same.
