Buried memories of the Spanish Civil War are revealed when a woman’s grandfather searches for her father’s remains and discovers the story of an idealistic young teacher in Tarragona. I was very lucky to find this film on a Singapore Airlines flight!
She encounters the local priest, who is dead authoritarian, then the authoritarian government and Franco’s forces on the brink of the Spanish Civil War
It tells the story of a beautiful progressive teacher who follows the little-known and rather revolutionary “Frienet Method” and tries it out in a small village school in rural Spain. Bad timing!
I found it very moving and a great testament to the humanity and spirit of this teacher
She is beaten, she is found nearly lifeless in front of her young disciples, then murdered and her body is dumped, but she is never found. The film rediscovers her story when the great-grandson of one of her students tries to find his great-grandfather’s own burial in a mass grave.
Unfortunately, the "true story" book it is based on does not seem to be available in English yet
It deserves more attention and visibility in art circles, at least in the UK, Europe and where I live in Australia.
