The Brazilian film with the greatest international impact in recent years, winner of the Best Screenplay Award at the Venice Film Festival and nominated for an Oscar, I’m Still Here dramatizes the trajectory of the Paiva family between the arrest of Rubens Paiva, the father, and Eunice’s struggles after her husband disappears. Walter Salles immerses the viewer in the intimacy of this family and makes them partners, making them care about the fate of each one of them, creating three-dimensional, real, credible characters. Fernanda Torres plays the role of her life, an almost Greek heroine marked by tragedy, with subtlety, never falling into exaggeration or caricature. The detailed set design, the lean script, the natural interpretations, the carefully chosen soundtrack, the precise editing, all contribute to the director being able to convey exactly what he intended to do. Since I knew the story, I had read the book on which the film is based, in addition to the account of it, my attention was focused on the cinematographic solutions used by the director. He manages to give this particular story a universal character that can reach an audience anywhere in the world.
