The way a police officer becomes an agent (or informant or confidential informant) is through the use of the acronym MICE, which stands for: MoneyIdeologyCompromise (also known as Blackmail)Ego. During Martian’s dialogue with Dr. Blake, the acronym “OBE” is incorrectly explained as “Overtaken by Events.” In U.S. government agencies, including the Intelligence Community and the Department of Defense, the correct/official explanation of the acronym “OBE” is “Overtaken by Events.” The opening credits feature characters and scenes from the series, interspersed with mirrored panels. Former CIA Director of Counterintelligence James Jesus Angleton, also known as the “poet of spies”, described the intelligence game as a “land of mirrors”, a phrase borrowed from a poem by T.S. Eliot called Gerontion (the title means “little old man” in Greek and the poem is an interior monologue recounting the opinions and impressions of an old man, describing Europe after World War I through the eyes of a man who lived most of his life in the 19th century). In the world of intelligence, in the search for truth, it is difficult to distinguish between reality and its reflection, a kind of illusion, as if one were in a “hall of mirrors”. First of all, the casting is absolutely extraordinary. The film stars Michael Fassbender, Jeffrey Wright, Richard Gere, and Katherine Waterston. This casting is more than enough reason to give this series, which is actually really good, a chance. I wouldn’t be surprised to see this series and most of its actors nominated for awards during award season. The series tells the story of a CIA agent (Fassbender) who is ordered to abandon his secret life and return to the field with his ex-lover (Waterston), who he is still in love with. His love for her begins to interfere with his real life and mission. If you are a fan of spy thrillers or a good detective series, check this out. You won’t be disappointed.
