Brutalist is full of surprises
The characters are not what you expect – not in some Scooby Doo-ending way, but in the more subtle, gradual ways that real people reveal themselves – they reveal themselves over time, in a new context, or when forced by circumstance. The setting here is post-World War II horror. Adrien Brody’s Laszlo, a Jewish architect who escaped the clutches of bloody Europe, enters America’s welcoming arms—or confronts them—in a frenetic opening sequence that evokes the idea that you were literally born into the Statue of Liberty. His becomes a journey of constantly navigating life’s various horrors: existential, professional, familial, intimate—never taking his eyes off the prize of great achievement and never assessing the value of that prize.
What’s the lesson?
Is it the shameful discovery that his success was born not in spite of trauma, but because of it? Do we owe it to abuse? To the forces of culture, land, power, and those who wield it, in building our brutal heritage (and homelands)? Are our lives gasoline burned on the way to somewhere more meaningful?
But there’s no novel
The film is charming, cool-looking, and not boring (did you hear it’s long?). It feels like it’s based on an old novel—a mysterious book I’d love to explore because of some of the details the film refuses to share. This older man’s search for meaning becomes ours. And any greater understanding of the arrival of Lazlo, his family’s machinations, his land and rootlessness, for better or worse, we feel it’s up to us to build.
